I've been waiting for this moment for a long time; To finally figure out what my pinion angle will be! Today we build a crossmember to mount the transmission to the frame. Not just any crossmember though. It has to be removable to allow future maintenance of the transmission, rear main seal, exhaust, etc.

Did I hear right...? As 3:30 I heard "21 Volts are 350 INCHES PER SECOND of wire..." Did I hear right...? Isn't 350 inches the same as 29 FEET PER SECOND...? Wound't you have a "pond of metal" in the weld by the 3rd to 4th second...?
Hahaha! A pond. Yes. That’s what happens when a video guy tries to explain welding. I had fps or frames per second on the mind at the time.

Hey Harold! Yes, construction is finished. (Well there’s a little painting left but I wouldn’t be me if I actually finished something.) Now it’s hot and I’m having difficulty motivating myself to go out and work on stuff. I’ll likely be staying inside and perhaps editing some footage from some older projects. 🤔 See you shortly!

@@GarageFab I’m an Aussie and the hard ch hurts my ears. I also hear you guys say CH anger as in a 45 degrees chamfer, shamfer is how it is here but I suppose that’s the British English side of things.
If you ever want to chamfer a hole get some debur hand tools. Much safer and more controlled than a grinder for the job. Unless youre working on some hardened stuff.
Might sound strange since I’ve been fabbing since 2007, but I only learned of the debur tool recently. (2-3 years ago?) One of the greatest tools ever, and yet I still forget to use it sometimes. 🤷♂️

Does poly bushings need to be PRELOADED? Some say no !! M not sure
For the type shown in this video, no! Preloading is NOT necessary. These are allowed to rotate similar to a bearing so they can spin indefinitely without damage. Bonded bushings (most often rubber) must be loaded first before tightening the bolt because tightening them with the suspension drooping will cause the bearings to over-rotate and tear. Hopefully this makes sense. Lemme know!
Yez the rubber bushings i usualy jack the suspension up just to ride hight bout nd then i turk bolts nd drop the car down ,, but i am replacing upper CA wish bone w camber adj nd they have poly bushings no greasing jerks tho !!
Perfect! I’d highly recommend installing Zerk fittings or finding someone to do it for you. They will squeak. It’s only a matter of time. It’s just the nature of polyurethane. Unless you’re not easily annoyed, you’re really gonna want to be able to lube them up without having to take them apart.

Unfortunately no, not yet. What do you mean by lining up? I’d be happy to try and help the best I can remotely.
Pretty risky commitment welding in the 4-link without knowing your driveshaft angle. You will need to be between a 9-11 degree driveshaft angle to maintain a <3 deg pinion operating angle.
I'd watch you explain how to assemble a puzzle or anything else you want to explain. Youre that good. Nice job on the drywall demo. I spent a career in contruction and removed tons of drywall. I never understood why all the remodling shows on tv show somebody bashing a drywall apart with a sledge hammer. Take it off in the biggest pieces possible like you did. It saves time in cleanup and creates way less dust.
Why don't driveshafts use CV joints?
Occasionally CVs are used on driveshafts. My guess on why it’s not more common is simply cost. When vehicle manufacturers build millions of vehicles, pinching pennies is really important. CV joints use a lot more material and are more difficult to manufacture so that equals more $. And because U joints work just fine when set up properly, there’s no need to spend the extra money. Just my guess though. 🤷♂️
You could have welded together 2 right angles to make a T, or bought a T, and used that for the top rail. That way you could use the tool mounts so that can't come loose or tip, but they could still slide left to right.

So my lifted truck shutters during normal takeoff but not on the highway, is it worth adjusting my pinion angle ~2°?

What do you do about all the welding on the rear-end housing, which must cause some warping? That would make a good video.
Fantastic video! Loved it. One question though: you never mentioned about the actual operating angles of each U joints in a single cardan shaft. Do they really need to be at no more than 3 degrees? On my FJ Cruiser I have transfer case and differential flange angles marching at 3 degrees. The drive shaft has a 10 degree slope. The operating angles in each U joint is 7 degrees and I am getting vibrations between 90 and 105 km/h. :( O can adjust yeh rear pinion angle to minimise the U joint operating angles, but then both, transfer case and Differential, won't be parallel anymore... :/

Stupid question how do you measure for your notch say you have to have a 2' in between to pipes and you want to notch the 2' section in do you measure off the notched instide part or off the longest part maybe im over thinking this 🤔
Not stupid at all, Charlie. First lemme make sure I’m understanding you. The way I’m interpreting that question is you want to notch both ends of a short tube and you want it to fit between two other tubes. If I’m wrong, ignore the rest of this and clarify. First measure the distance between the 2 existing tubes. You said it’s 2”? In theory if you were to cut a 2” length of tube, it would fit tightly between your other tubes but it wouldn’t wrap around the way it would if it were notched. So you essentially need to ADD material meaning the 2” is actually the distance between the throats of the notches on each end. Remember when notching equal sized tubes, the notch depth will be 1/4 the diameter of the tube. 1/4 of a 2” diameter is 1/2”. There will be a notch on each end so two notches that are 1/2” each will require an extra 1” of material. All that said, you’ll cut a length of tubing at 3”, and carve in two 1/2” deep notches. That should fit nicely. Getting that piece in between two other tubes that have already been welded is another story. 😆 This stuff can be confusing, especially in writing, so hopefully I didn’t make things worse. Lemme know!

I can totally relate on the point of nobody explaining the “why.” I have to understand the “why” also before i can move ahead with anything. For example: i can’t for the life of me find on the internet or from people the answer to the question “Why use a 4 link for a street truck rather than a leaf spring setup”. There are tons of vids of guys installing 4 links for off road, for lowering, and for regular street use, but nobody ever says why! It’s just assumed it’s better. Meanwhile, there is a huge contingent of guys that swear by leafs, and say 4 link is a waste of money. They can’t explain why either, just vague statements like “ride quality”. What does that really mean? I’m building a ‘72 Bronco from ground up. Clean slate. I an a very aggressive street driver. I like to drive, corner, brake, and accelerate fast. Which is better for that, 4 link or leafs? WHY? I dunno. Thanks for all you do!

Oooo! I like that idea but I need more info. What do you put the wrench on when the tap is in the drill?
@@GarageFab I buy those taps that have a little hole at the top rather than a little point, and press a countersink or whatever into the hole.
I have a very specific question about Honda civic/Crx/Del Sol, Trailing arm bushings. There is a discussion about using poly bushings in the trailing arms some people seem to love them and some warn that they will cause snap oversteer because they limit the movement of the trailing arm (Binding) and i just can't come to a conclusion about it. When i hear people warn about them i start to wonder if they might have installed them wrong not rotating them correctly before lowering the car down or something else in their suspension setup that's wrong maybe too stiff sway bar? And when i hear people praising the poly bushings i wonder if they maybe just don't drive the car hard enough to ever experience the issue? One thing i do know is that people will follow ideas they might not understand and I don't understand suspension geometry enough to even make a decision between the two groups of people. I now that this a very specific question about a specific car and you might not have the answer but the 50/50 opinion is driving me crazy enough to start asking the question in other places like right here. Maybe if you someday get your hands on a Civic EG or Del Sol you could make a video about it, Just be ready for some heavy fights in the comment section.😅 I'm thinking about reaching out to a few poly bushing manufacturers to hear what they have to say about it but I also know that every business want to sell things and make money so the answers are probably going to be skewed to a very positive outlook on the trailing arm bushings that they are selling. Either way this video is incredibly good it helped me out allot in making my own bushings, Thank you!🙂
It's strange to me the industry didn't just provide harder rubber bushings. Poly bushings have so many flaws, noise, vibration, and issues and of course they are more expensive.

hey bud, are you any closer moving back to Loveland? i lived in Northglenn/Broomfield in the early 80s (i'm from the Boston area, where i'm currently living), and now i'm making plans to move to Longmont to be close to my kids n grands. the big question: does it make sense to bring my Bridgeport with me, or should i sell it and buy one out there? any insights?
I wish I could say yes, but in reality it will be many many years until I can make that move. Something I considered was purchasing a vacation home “AirBnB” and renting it out for half the year. But getting a place in the canyon would be a long shot. I don’t have a good answer for you on the Bridgeport. That’s a bucket list purchase for me. My first thought is move it. It’ll be expensive, but I can’t imagine it’ll be the cost of replacing it. The cost could be worth not having the hassle of locating another and the inconveniences that come with it. By that I mean, you know the condition of yours. You’re familiar with its quirks and the work it needs. Buying new old stuff can be frustrating. That’s just me talking out my butt. I’ve never moved a Bridgeport! 😆
